25.1.11

1/20/11 The swamps of Louisiana are starkly beautiful but the channels are often straight lines for miles. We got to Lake Charles but decided the anchorage situation was not to our liking so we dropped back a few miles and tied up at Bow Tie Marina. They offer fuel and nice hot showers. We have a shower/tub on the boat but we conserve water so the longer version ashore is welcome. Lake Charles is the home to several floating casinos. Two we saw were fashioned like old time river boats but La Bearge Du Lac casino looks like a regular building. According to the proprietor at Bow Tie, in order to comply with local law the casino must float and so this one "floats" in it's own pond which is controlled by automatic pumps and actually must have a licensed captain on board even though it will never move.
